Summary This project examines the strained relationship between the military and the media and then attempts to correct some of the shortcomings in coverage with six written articles and a photo essay. By focusing on the lower ranking service members and exploring their backgrounds and interests, as opposed to relying on high-ranking, official sources, this project seeks to answer the question, who is the military? The articles included are a story about Marines who went through boot camp not speaking any English, a National Guardsman who fled his homeland of Nicaragua to avoid military service, only to join the U.S. military, a trend story about veterans going into acting, a deaf ROTC cadet trying to change the Army entrance requirements, an informational piece on the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, a story about becoming a U.S. citizen through military service and a photo essay documenting what it takes to become a U.S. soldier.
