Summary Current research emphasizes the principal's role in effective school leadership and student learning outcomes; however, there still exists a lack of specificity regarding the particular practices and characteristics that comprise quality school leadership. According to The Commission on No Child Left Behind, principals have a fundamental role in supporting and monitoring teacher instruction and in communicating an organizational purpose and vision, while also motivating and sustaining school efforts. They are, therefore, the most critical figure on a school campus that determines the direction of the accreditation process and what value the process has within the school culture. This study examines the relationship between the characteristics of high school principals and the WASC accreditation term. This study proposes that principals whose school have been awarded a 6-year term have engaged in more transformational leadership practices or display characteristics that are transformational in nature more than their non-6 year accredited peers. Using a quantitative methodology, this study collected self-reported principal practices and characteristics using a survey instrument developed by the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration. The researcher found that there was no difference in leadership practices, or characteristics between principals whose school had been awarded a 6-year accreditation term, and those principals whose school had been awarded a lesser term under WASC.
