Summary Energy harvesting is a technique to obtain energy directly from the environment to power devices. Solar radiation is one source of ambient energy that can be used for powering motes in distributed embedded sensor systems. In this thesis, the author proposes a new algorithm, called location-aware greedy, for solar energy harvesting in sensor systems. The goal is to optimize the system lifetime, while still maintaining good sensing coverage. Using real data derived from the Intel Lab's sensor system deployment experiments, the author assessed the efficiency of the newly developed algorithms through simulations and by comparing the performance of location-aware greedy algorithm with a traditional greedy approach.
