Summary During the Nazi rule of Germany in the 30's, more than 17,000 deaf people were forcibly sterilized as part of government policy. Many were killed. Motherland follows the life of one woman, Gertrude, through school, marriage and the rise of Nazism. A tale of love, loss and survival seen through the eyes of a group of friends, some deaf by birth, some deaf by accident. The play is signed in British Sign Language (use only on computer).
