Summary The collection documents various grievances and contract violations between workers and employers that could not be settled during collective bargaining negotiations or through regular internal grievance processes. In such cases one or more area arbitrators were used to resolve the conflict. Documentation found within the collection includes arbitration awards, decisions, dissenting opinions, correspondence, exhibits, hearing proceedings, transcripts, notes, testimony, and statements.

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE), formerly the Institute of Industrial Relations, at the University of California, Berkeley, was founded in 1945 by Clark Kerr, who later became Chancellor of UC Berkeley and President of the University of California system. The IRLE focuses on research concerning employment and workplace issues.
